How to get to Trondheim

Situated in central Norway, Trondheim is easily accessible whatever your choice of transportation. By plane you will land at Trondheim’s modern airport at Vaernes (32 km from the city). If you come by train you can relax and look at the unique Norwegian countryside. If you are coming from the south of Norway you can drive through the majestic Dovre mountains. Another special way to visit Trondheim is by the coastal express which will give you a chance to experience Norway’s special and beautiful coast.

From Trondheim you can also take a trip along some of our beautiful coastal areas. You can go by ferry or catamaran to the Fosen Peninsula, visit the islands of Hitra and Froya or the city of Kristiansund, some 200 km south-west of Trondheim.

Passports and Visas::
It is highly advisable that you check with the Norwegian embassy in your country to find out the exact entry requirements for Norway.

All foreign nationals from countries outside the Schengen area (see also below) who wish to enter Norway must have a valid passport. Nationals of countries within the Schengen area must have a valid passport or other identity document which is officially recognized as a valid travel document. Only Nordic nationals travelling in the Nordic countries are exepted from this passport requirement.

Foreign nationals from a number of countries outside the Schengen area who intend to visit more than one Schengen country but to spend the longest time in Norway, or for whom Norway is the first country they will enter in the Schengen area, must have visa affixed to their passport by a Norwegian foreign service mission or where appropriate the foreign service mission of another Schengen country representing Norway. Everyone requiring a visa must present a passport. It should be noted that Norway may only be entered at an authorized border crossing point within the Schengen area where passport control is carried out.

In 2001, Norway became part of the Schengen area. The Schengen area includes the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Participation in the Schengen cooperation has an impact on applications for visas. Generally speaking, a visa for one of the countries in the Schengen area is valid for a stay in all the other Schengen countries during the period for which the visa is valid. Over a period of six months, you are not permitted to spend more than a total of three months in the Schengen area. Unless otherwise provided, all foreign nationals must have a visa to enter Norway.
